| Titolo: Izmo Summer School
| Title: Izmo Summer School , Public Spaces in the City Date: September 5th - 14th, 2011 Location: Turin, Italy In collaboration with: Circoscrizione 7 Torino, Politecnico di Torino Second School of Architecture, St. John International University Team: Alessandro Grella, Alberto Rudellat, Marta Saccocci, Giulia Carlone, Giulia Marra, Pasquale Onofrio, Gianluca Sabena, Marco Menonna, Elena Candelari, Ianira Vassallo, Giuseppe Vinci, Lauren Shultz, Elena Vitti Keywords: workshop, lecture, design, public space, public art, participation, urban regeneration ObjectivesOrganize and manage a 10 day international summer school on public space in the city. | Urban development in Torino and its public space The lesson "Urban development in Torino and its public space" will focus on Turin, Italy's first capital. Backed by two millennia of history, Turin is now the heart of a massive process of territorial transformation. | Urban Center Metropolitano - Torino
Urban Center Metropolitano is a presiding organization providing support to the transformation processes in Torino and its metropolitan area, together with research, promotion and training on issues concerning architecture and the urban debate. |
|
| Participation, inclusion and the work in the field The lesson "Participation, inclusion and the work in the field" will introduce students to theories and practices to support local development and urban revitalization initiatives through the participation and social inclusion of the citizen. Patrizia Saroglia and Alberto Rudellat will focus on the stakeholders, the decision makers and any actors that play a role and have to be involved in the planning and policies with special consideration to appropriate methods, times and places. The lesson will be concluded by Alessandro Grella who will introduce topics such as: the art of moving, travel, walking, exploring; an excursus from nomadism to the contemporary reappropriation of the urban space. | Patrizia Saroglia
Another interest of her research is the deliberative democracy events for public policies. In 2009 she was a Fellow of the German Marshall Found (GMF) Comparative Domestic Policy Program, studying employment programs for people with disabilities. Since 2003 she is coordinator of LAPO (Laboratorio di Politiche) a research center for policy analysis located in Turin. | Alberto Rudellat
|
| In the public space, within the public art The lesson "In the public space, within the public art" will invite students to examine the role of the public space and of the arts and humanities in the urban setting as well as within the context of city growth and development. Alessandro Grella will focus on the public and semi-public space and the places for art and installations. He will discuss the ways in which these spaces are designed, planned and supported by the municipality and community for aesthetic, cultural and historic reasons, and finally the amenities available for artists in promoting community well-being. | Alessandro Grella
His current area of research is Information and Communication Technologies in the planning and participatory processes. |
| Urban Landscapes The lesson "Urban Landscapes" will introduce the students to some contemporary ways in which the city is conceived and designed. Alongside the theoretical in-classroom portion, the Summer School will give its participants concrete ways to plan and realize installations in the public space. Already from Day 2 the students will begin to experiment with qualitative research methodologies in the field (urban drift; urban missions; Q&A sessions), which will allow them to observe then enter into contact with the public space (insert link). Students will have the opportunity to realize an installation and in this way confront the territory and its inhabitants.
The next day the participants will be divided into several work groups, the information gathered will be analyzed in the classroom followed by the first design studio session after which each group will present the results they’ve obtained until that moment then form the first project hypotheses. During the 4th and 5th day, two design studio sessions will take place in which the students will define in a detailed manner the proposed intervention in Piazza Alimonda. In the course of the phases of field research, the design studio workshop and the realization of the intervention, the participants will be constantly under supervision, mentored and assisted by members of Izmo. The last three days will be dedicated to the realization and installation of the project.
Each student will have at his or her disposition a budget of 50 euro for the acquisition of materials, which Izmo will provide the tools necessary to work. Each work group will be able to realize a project of their own design and the overall redefinition of the public space will be divided and coordinated between the groups through a series of collective revisions to the proposed installation.
At the end of the work process, the installations will be presented to the public during an afternoon dedicated to the unveiling of the newly redefined spaces.

| 19:00 - Tuesday, September 6 SUMISURA. resources for the environment and the city Through public space Public space is not always where you expect it to be. | SUMISURA is a cooperative |
| 19:00 - Thursday, September 8 a.titolo situa.to Situa.to is a group of 30 young people from different backgrounds (art, architecture, design, humanities and social sciences) researching the city and its transformations to bring out new aspects, to discover potential problems and experimental design practices intended for the social and cultural dimensions of urban public spaces. Situa.to in the initial phase has involved young people in a structured path to higher education in workshops, lectures and design studios held by architects, experts in the social sciences and philosophy, and professionals active in the field of literature, theater, design, and music. After the training phase, participants explored the metropolitan area with the intent to identify the needs and potential sites, as well as the perception that the residents have of the area. From the research conducted through surveys, archival evidence, meetings with residents and associations emerged design ideas for cultural and artistic intervention in the public space to be developed with residents and other stakeholders in the territory (associations, territorial administration, etc.). From 30 design hypotheses that emerged with the research, 10 projects have been developed on the basis of their sustainability and feasibility. Small groups of participants formed that then developed an operational framework and acted in several neighborhoods as "activators" who represented the desire for action by the residents. Situa.to is a project still in progress that aims to foster the development of active citizenship and self-potential projects. www.situa.to | a.titolo Since 2010, a.titolo has become the artistic director of the triennial Cesac, Experimental Center for Contemporary Arts at the Filatoio di Caraglio (CN). www.atitolo.it

In this section we’ve collected some information on accommodation in Turin. The list in order of cost, beginning with the most economical:

Summer School students will be awarded 3 credits (ECTS) for a total of 75 hours for their educational efforts, recognized by the Politecnico di Torino, which are transferable to any other university (with ECTS in Europe).
Participants may also choose to apply the three credits toward a Master's degree in architecture at St. John International University in Vinovo-Torino, Italy.
In addition, at the end of the course each student will receive a certificate of attendance.

Izmo Summer School does not provide any insurance for students. Please make sure that you have your own travel insurance when you arrive in Italy.

Accordingly, anyone entering Italy from within the Schengen area needs only a valid passport or some other official document issued for travelling purposes.
Students coming from outside of the Schengen area will need a passport and possibly also a visa.
Do you need a Visa?
Foreigners entering Italy for periods not to exceed 90 days, pursuant to Law no. 68/2007, whether or not subject to visa requirements, do not need to apply for a sojourn permit.
The sojourn permit has been replaced by a declaration of presence on Italian soil.
Only this sojourn permit ('permesso di soggiorno'), which is issued for the reason and for the period indicated on the visa, authorises an alien to sojourn in Italy.
Aliens coming from countries that do not apply the Schengen Convention the obligation to make a declaration of presence is satisfied through application of the USV sticker on the travel document at the moment of border control.
Aliens from countries that apply the Schengen Convention are required, on the other hand, to file a declaration of presence within 8 days of arrival with the police headquarters (“Questura”) of the province in which he/she is staying, using the proper form.
For those staying in hotels and other reception facilities, the declaration of presence is handled by the reception facility upon check-in, a copy of which is supplied to the guest to be displayed to authorities upon eventual request.

Situated in the North-West of the country, it is just about 100km from Milan, the Ligurian sea and the French border: all of which makes Turin the “one hour city”, readily accessed and handy for the mountains, lakes, sea and the rest of Italy. Fast trains mean that Milan is just an hour away, Paris five hours and then, from December 2009, Piedmont's chief city will form part of the High-Speed track taking in Turin-Milan-Naples-Salerno, thus becoming even closer to Italy's south.
Turin's International Airport has a daily connection with the main cities of Italy and Europe and lays on a good transport service to the town centre, both by bus, coach (Sadem) and train, as well as taxis of course.
GTT - Gruppo Torinese Trasporti -runs Turin’s urban transport service with an efficient network of buses, trams, railways (the city rail link is currently under construction and will further improve mobility in the province) and a futuristic, automatic underground line, partially opened for the Winter Olympics of 2006 and currently due to be completed by 2011. The service is generally operative from early morning (about 5am) until midnight. Tickets cost € 1 or € 3.50 for a Day Pass, but all Torino+Piemonte Card holders travel free on GTT transports. For those reaching the city by car, the park & ride system allows visitors to leave the car in the outer areas of town close to the main communication routes and then take the faster, more relaxing public transport to get to the centre.
http://www.5t.torino.it - http://www.metrotorino.it
The 160km of reserved paths, 40km of which within the urban parks make “green” Turin one of the best cities for cycling and therefore the most eco-friendly in Italy.
Cycle racks are dotted around strategic points of the city for parking bikes, while the bike hire service (half price for Torino+Piemonte Card holders) means that tourists too can enjoy the cycle system and visit the city in a 'sustainable' way. One of the classic trails recommended is along the Po and Dora Riparia rivers which not only are the perfect places for peacefully enjoying delightful views but above all for discovering just how closely connected Turin is with its waterways and its mountains and hills.
